NDC records come from the FDA NDC Directory and label information from FDA Structured Product Labeling, both through the openFDA API. Trial records come from the ClinicalTrials.gov API. The drug-to-HCPCS directory is curated by Med-Code and should be checked against the current CMS HCPCS file.
openFDA Drug NDC Directory
Every NDC record, labeler name, dosage form, route, marketing category and packaging configuration comes from the FDA's own listing file, served through the openFDA API. The FDA refreshes it on its own schedule, so a product approved this week may take several days to appear.
Because the data is self-reported by labelers, its text carries their conventions verbatim — inconsistent capitalisation, abbreviations, occasional typos. Names on this site are normalised for display only; the underlying values are unchanged.
Structured Product Labeling
Label information on NDC pages — the label version date, whether the label carries a boxed warning, and a short excerpt of the indications section — comes from the manufacturer's SPL submission through openFDA. Med-Code links to the full label on DailyMed rather than reproducing it.
ClinicalTrials.gov
Trial records, phases, recruiting status, sponsors and eligibility criteria come from the ClinicalTrials.gov API. Registry entries are maintained by sponsors, so a status of recruiting reflects the last time the sponsor updated the record.
The HCPCS crosswalk
The drug-to-HCPCS directory — which drugs map to which J-codes, the code descriptors and billable units — is curated by Med-Code. It is the one part of the site that is editorial rather than fetched. HCPCS Level II is maintained by CMS and changes quarterly, so confirm a code against the current CMS HCPCS file before it goes on a claim.
What this site is not
It is a reference for identifiers, not a pricing service and not clinical advice. Nothing here reflects a specific payer's fee schedule, coverage policy or authorisation requirements, all of which vary by contract.
Questions
How current is the data?
NDC records are requested from openFDA and cached on Med-Code's server for up to 24 hours; search results for up to 6 hours. A change at the FDA appears here within a day. The curated HCPCS directory changes only when Med-Code edits it.
